Warren Buffets 5/25 rule

Warren Buffett once shared some of the best advice on focus I have come across. It came during a conversation with his longtime pilot, and it is all about ruthless prioritization that can change how you approach your goals.

He asked the pilot to write down his top 25 career goals on one side of a page. Then he told him to review that list carefully and circle the top 5 that mattered most.

Those top 5 become your main focus. The remaining 20 go on your avoid-at-all-costs list. You do not touch them until the top 5 are completed. They are not bad ideas. They are simply distractions that pull your energy away from what truly moves the needle.

Success is often about saying no to almost everything else. This protects your time and effort for the vital few things that count.

I have been thinking about this exercise a lot lately with my own work at Portia's Hearth and life as a stay-at-home dad. It lines up so well with Stoic principles of discipline and focusing on what is within your control. The exercise forces real clarity. You see your scattered wants on paper, then narrow them down to what deserves your full attention right now.

Try it yourself. Grab a sheet of paper, list 25 goals or important things, then pick your top 5. Put the rest aside.

What ends up on your lists? It is simple but powerful. What do you think? Worth testing out?

Let me know how it goes for you.
